Girls Junior Varsity Tennis, Girls Varsity Tennis · 2017 Girls Tennis Sectional Champions

Congrats to our girls tennis team who defeated the Lapel Bulldogs 3-2 on Friday night.  Here are Coach Devault’s comments from the championship match.

SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS:

Amazing win for the Tigers as they capture the Sectional Championship!   Due to rain earlier and in the forecast for the afternoon, the sectional finals match was moved indoors to Greentown.     While the change forced both teams to adjust, the Tiger never batted an eye winning the title in down to the wire form.

The Tigers sadly went down 0-2 early in the match.   Lapel is known to be strong at 1S & 2S and it showed tonight.   Alexa has made huge strides this season, but Benagh from Lapel has been on a big roll the last few weeks and Alexa was no match for her.   Blaine ran into another strong player at 1S as she lost twice last year to Shannon including in the sectional finals in three sets.   Blaine started strong jumping out to a lead, but to Shannon’s credit she took off mid way through the 1st set and paced the ball well.  Blaine while facing the best around, playes with great passion and energy.   The Tigers got their 1st point at 3S as Lindsie played her best match of the season from start to finish taking early control and never looking back.  A point I though might go three sets before the match, was a dominate performance from Lindsie.    Huge win for her and helped push the momentum to the Tigers.

Indoors we had to have a point wait to go on (There are only four courts) and that point was 1D.  Megan & Mary had to sit and wait for their turn and saw Lapel 1D come out strong early in the match.   While the Tigers led, they were tested early.  Once they got their footing, they started taking control.   Mary was all over the court allowing Megan to play aggressive up front.  Megan was a little up and down in the 1st set as Lapel was hitting their lines well.   Luckily Megan and Mary have been tested a lot this season, so they never batted an eye and took control late into he 1st and throughout the 2nd to get the Tigers to 2-2.

All attention fell to the 3rd court as 2D team of Alli & Madalyn tried to get the final and Championship point.  It would take over 3 hours before the final serve of the night.    A very close 1st set saw Lapel get a tight 4-6 win.   While many woudl be downhearted, we did not let up at all.   Alli & Madalyn after a few minor changes in a tight 2nd set took control and won playing great tennis in the 2nd.   As 1D finished up, 2D took a short break before everyone focused on the 3rd set.   Alli & Madalyn dropped the 1st game, but settled down nicely to roll off five straight.   Lapel served to make it 5-2, but on the rotation Alli & Madalyn would not be denied as Madalyn served it out as Alli moved the ball all over the court and the title was grabbed by the Tigers.   I cannot say how proud I was of how Alli & Madalyn handled the pressure and how the Tigers came out after a strange week to capture their 2nd title and 1st since 2012.   Huge win and a great team effort.   Wonderful to see how hard the girls battled this week and earned a great reward for their play.

Tigers will play host Marion in the 1st round of the Marion Regionals 5:00 Tuesday.
